Software and files
You upload a PDF. Free tools are enough. Canva's free plan exports a print PDF at a custom size, and Scribus, free layout software, handles a 100-page book well.
Make the pages the size of the book plus 3 mm bleed on every side, and export them as one PDF. The cover is a separate PDF with back, spine and front, plus 19 mm to wrap the board. The product page gives its size. Details in the print-ready PDF guide.
Choosing photos
Three passes
Delete doubles and blurry shots, star what you'd miss, then choose per day. Two weeks of travel usually ends at 120 to 200 photos.
Small things too
A train ticket, a menu or the rental car between the big views makes it read like your trip.
Use the originals
Photos sent through chat apps or saved from social media are compressed. Take them from your phone, camera or cloud backup at full size.
Structure: follow the route

Open with a map
A spread with the route and numbered stops. Draw it by hand, or trace one from OpenStreetMap and credit the source.

One chapter per stop
A title page with the name, the dates and the distance from the last stop, then three to six spreads of photos.

Vary the layout
Alternate a full-bleed photo with a spread of four or six smaller ones.

Short captions
Where, when and one thing the photo doesn't show. Same spot on every page, at least 10 mm from the trim.

Below about 5 cm wide, a photo is too small to look at. More photos than room: choose, or add pages.

Resolution for panoramas
A 30 × 30 cm layflat spread with bleed is 606 × 306 mm: about 7150 × 3600 pixels at 300 dpi, at least 3580 × 1810 at 150 dpi. A 12-megapixel phone photo (4032 pixels wide) is enough; a stitched phone panorama is wider still. A full A4 landscape page needs about 3580 pixels wide.
In a photo book the pages curve into the binding, so keep faces and text out of the middle of a spread. On aluminium, white isn't printed and turns silver: pick a photo with strong colours or a dark foreground.
