Size by discipline

What 40 pages cost

Per copy, with the simplest options. Heavy paper and a matte cover cost a little more.

A 24-page A4 portrait magazine with your best five projects costs €7.49.

Putting it together

  1. 1

    Select 8 to 15 projects

Pick what fits the place you're applying to, and leave out weak work.

  2. 2

    Order

Strong projects first and last, experimental work in the middle.

  3. 3

    Per project

One large image, then details and process, and two or three sentences: the question, what you did, the result.

  4. 4

    Export

Inside pages as one PDF, the cover as a separate PDF with back, spine and front. Bleed, fonts and colour: print-ready PDF guide.

Paper: heavy matte or heavy gloss

For a portfolio hardcover, choose one of the heavy papers; the next page doesn't show through. Heavy matte doesn't reflect meeting-room lights and suits drawings, architecture and text. Heavy gloss gives deeper blacks and stronger colour for photography and renders, but shows fingerprints.

Standard matte is thinner, fine for a process book. A layflat has its own thick pages.

Details reviewers notice

Resolution

300 dpi at print size, 150 dpi at the least. Screenshots and web images are often too small; the preview warns you.

Text away from the spine

Hardcover pages curve into the spine, so keep captions off the inner edge. A layflat has no gutter.

Name and contact on the back

Put your name, website and email on the back cover in case the book gets separated from your application.

Questions

How many pages should a portfolio have?
24 to 40 pages, with 8 to 15 projects, is enough for most applications.
What's the difference between a layflat and a hardcover?
A layflat opens flat, so images can cross the middle, up to 140 pages. A hardcover goes to 400 pages with a choice of papers. See photo book vs layflat.
Can I make a different version for each application?
Yes. Upload a new PDF and order just that copy. With the same page count, the cover file still fits.
Will my colours come out as on my screen?
Close, but slightly less bright, because paper reflects light. Order one copy to check.
