Setting up a comic page

  1. 1

    Canvas: trim plus bleed

    A5 is 154 × 216 mm (148 × 210 mm plus 3 mm all round), A4 is 216 × 303 mm. Drawing at 150-200% and scaling down tightens the lines.

  2. 2

    Safe area

Keep balloons and captions 5 mm inside the trim. Panels that bleed must run all the way into the bleed, or a white line can show.

  3. 3

    Spine margin

On a paperback or hardcover, keep panel borders and balloons 10-15 mm from the spine. A stapled issue needs less.

  4. 4

    Resolution

300 dpi at printed size for colour, 600 dpi for black line art.

  5. 5

    Export

Interior pages as one PDF in reading order. A paperback or hardcover needs a separate cover PDF; the product page gives its size. See the print-ready PDF guide.

Lettering

Size

Measure at the printed size: 7-8 pt minimum for dialogue in A5, 8-10 pt in A4. Print a page at 100% at home to check.

100% K only

Set lettering in black ink only. Four-colour black can blur thin letters.

Live text or 600 dpi

Typed lettering stays sharp in the PDF. Scan hand lettering at 600 dpi.

Black for large areas

Black ink alone (100% K) prints as dark grey in large areas. Use it for line art and lettering. For a night sky or big shadows, use rich black: C60 M40 Y40 K100, 240% ink. Stay under about 300%, or the ink can set off on the facing page.

This applies to CMYK files. RGB files from Procreate, Clip Studio or Photoshop are converted for you; use 0, 0, 0 for dark areas. Don't put 100% K lines on a rich-black fill, or the lines disappear.

Paper is lighter than a screen, and dark greys can fill in. Lighten them a little where detail matters.
