Printing your thesis as an A4 book

    Check your programme's rules

    Some programmes want a bound copy for the assessors or a set cover layout. Their rules come first.

  2. 2

    Start chapters on a right-hand page

    Page 1 of your PDF is a right-hand page. In Word, add Layout > Breaks > Odd Page before each chapter. The blank pages this adds count towards the page count.

    25 mm inner margin

    Turn on mirrored margins in Word and keep tables and figures 10 mm from the spine. The Word guide covers every setting.

  4. 4

    Save as PDF

    Use File > Save as > PDF, not a PDF printer, so the fonts stay embedded and the page size stays exact.

  5. 5

    A separate cover file

    Title, name, student number, programme, supervisor and date on the front. A thin thesis has a narrow spine, so check its width on the product page before you put text on it.

Many students order paperbacks for the assessors and one hardcover for themselves. A paperback goes up to 200 pages, a hardcover up to 400.

Text on an A4 page

Line length

With 25 mm margins, an 11 pt line holds 85 to 95 characters, which is tiring to read. Use 12 pt, wider margins or two columns to get to 60 to 80.

Words per page

At 11 or 12 pt with 1.15 to 1.5 line spacing, about 350 to 500. A 25,000-word thesis with figures comes to 60 to 80 pages.

Two columns

At 9.5 to 10 pt, a two-column page holds 600 to 800 words. Leave 5 mm between the columns.

Thick books

Above 150 pages a glued book opens less far, so add a few millimetres to the inner margin.

A 12-megapixel phone photo (4032 × 3024 px) fills an A4 page at over 300 dpi. Across a landscape spread it drops to about 170 dpi, which is still fine but the limit for crisp detail.

Slides as a book

A 16:9 slide on an A4 landscape page leaves a white band of about 4 cm. Set the slide size to A4 in PowerPoint, Keynote or Google Slides before you start.

How much does it cost to print a thesis?
An 80-page A4 paperback costs from €36.59, a hardcover from €41.79. You see the exact price when you upload.
Will my thesis arrive before my deadline?
Order a week ahead to be safe. The checkout shows the expected delivery date before you pay.
My thesis must be printed single-sided. Can you do that?
Yes: add a blank page after every page in your PDF, so each printed page has a blank back. That doubles the page count, and a paperback takes up to 200 pages, a hardcover up to 400.
What resolution do I need for a full-page A4 photo?
2551 × 3579 pixels at 300 dpi, including 3 mm bleed on each side. The minimum is 1276 × 1789 pixels (150 dpi).
Does an A4 book open flat?
A glued book opens well but not fully flat. For that, choose a layflat or spiral book. Binding types compares them.
