A sizes and photo sizes

A0 is one square metre. Fold it in half and you get A1; fold again for A2, then A3 and A4. All A sizes have the same shape (1:1.41), so a design made for A4 prints on any other A size without cropping.

20 × 30, 30 × 40 and 40 × 50 cm follow photo shapes instead. 2:3 is a camera photo, 3:4 most phone photos and 4:5 a portrait crop from Instagram. Print a photo on the size with its shape and nothing is cut off.

Pixels and viewing distance per size

For a portrait poster. 20 × 30 cm, A4 and A3 have 3 mm bleed on each side, included in the pixels; the larger sizes have no bleed. The viewing distance is about one and a half times the diagonal.

40 × 50 cm comes in portrait; every other size in portrait and landscape. On A1 and A0, 150 dpi looks sharp from where people stand. 300 dpi matters most on small posters seen up close.

Which size for which wall

  • Above a desk, in a bookcase20 × 30 cm, A4 or A3You see it from up close. Small sizes also work well in a group of three. More on A3 posters.
  • A student room, a hallwayA2 or 40 × 50 cmVisible from across the room and still easy to frame. A2 posters has gallery wall layouts.
  • Above a sofa or bedA1 or A0, landscapeAim for about two thirds of the furniture's width. Above most sofas that's 1 metre or more.
  • A conference, a shop window, an eventA1 or A0, portraitReadable from a few metres away. Many conferences ask for A0; see A0 posters.

Frames, hangers and paper

Frame or hanger, up to A2

Both are options on the poster page, at an extra cost, and made for the size you order. The hanger has rails at the top and bottom, a cord and no glass.

A1 and A0

A1 frames are easy to find in shops; A0 is easy to hang with clips or magnetic rails.

Matte or glossy

You choose on the A sizes and 20 × 30 cm. Matte doesn't reflect, so it's better behind glass; glossy gives deeper photo colours. 30 × 40, 40 × 30 and 40 × 50 cm come on one standard paper.

What to print for a frame you already own

A mat (passe-partout) fills the space between the poster and the frame.

  • 24 × 36 in (61 × 91 cm)

    Print
    A1
    Fit
With a mat: about 1 cm at the sides, 4 cm top and bottom

Order the mat with its opening a few millimetres smaller than the poster. A1 is 84.1 cm tall and doesn't fit a 60 × 80 cm frame.

Mistakes we see with poster sizes

  • A 3:2 camera photo on an A size: about 6% of the long side is cut off. We warn you above 2%; 20 × 30 cm keeps the whole photo.
  • An image saved from a website, often 1000 to 2000 pixels wide. That's enough for A4 at most.
  • Small text in a JPEG made at a small size and printed big: the letters turn soft. Export designs with text as PDF, which stays sharp at any size.
  • Text or faces right at the edge. Keep them 5 to 10 mm in; a frame also covers a few millimetres.

Questions

What are the standard poster sizes?
The A sizes (A4 to A0) and photo sizes like 20 × 30, 30 × 40 and 40 × 50 cm. We print all eight in portrait, and A4 to A0, 20 × 30 and 30 × 40 cm in landscape too.
What size poster should I hang above my sofa?
About two thirds of the sofa's width. For a 2-metre sofa that's an A0 in landscape (119 cm wide), or two A1 posters side by side.
What poster size fits a 50 × 70 cm frame?
A2 (42 × 59.4 cm) with a mat around it. In a 70 × 100 cm frame, A1 with a mat fits.
What resolution do I need for a poster?
300 dpi is ideal and 150 dpi the minimum. The table on this page lists the pixels for each size.
