Materials for a large print

Which size above which furniture

Art above furniture looks right at about two thirds of the furniture's width. The gaps between pieces are 6 to 8 cm.

To test a size, tape paper cut to that size on the wall for a day.

Two or three panels for a wide wall

  1. 1

    Pick the panels

    With 6 cm gaps, three 60 × 90 cm panels make 192 × 90 cm, three 60 × 60 cm make 192 × 60 cm and two 90 × 60 cm make 186 × 60 cm. On canvas, each 60 × 90 cm panel costs from €49.99.

  2. 2

    Check the pixels

One photo across 192 cm needs about 11,300 pixels in width at 150 dpi. A phone panorama or a few stitched camera photos get there; a single 12-megapixel photo doesn't.

  3. 3

    Cut out the panels

Lay out the full width with the gaps and cut each panel from it. The strips behind the gaps are lost, so keep faces away from them. A 60 × 90 cm canvas file is 66 × 96 cm because of the 3 cm wrap.

  4. 4

    Order and hang them together

Put all panels in one order. Measure from the centre of the whole block, and use a strip of cardboard as wide as the gap as a spacer.

The file you need for 90 × 60 cm

On aluminium, plexiglass and dibond the file is 906 × 606 mm with bleed. That's 5350 × 3579 pixels at our 150 dpi minimum, or 10701 × 7157 at 300 dpi. Canvas wraps 30 mm round the frame, so its file is 960 × 660 mm, or 5669 × 3898 pixels at 150 dpi and 11339 × 7795 at 300 dpi.

  • Camera, 24 megapixels

    Verdict
    Good
  • Phone or camera, 48 megapixels

    Verdict

    Pixels
    often 1000-2000 wide
    On 90 × 60 cm
    about 30-55 dpi
    Verdict
    Too small

From 2 to 3 metres away, 150 dpi looks as sharp as 300. On canvas, keep faces and text out of the outer 3 cm.

How high to hang it

Centre at 145-150 cm

On an open wall, hang the middle of the print 145 to 150 cm from the floor, about eye height.

Above a sofa: 20-25 cm

Leave 20 to 25 cm between the top of the backrest and the bottom of the print.

Above a bed: 25-35 cm

Leave 25 to 35 cm above the headboard, so you can sit up without touching the print.

Before you drill

  • Plasterboard needs cavity plugs or hooks for hollow walls, not a nail.
  • In concrete or brick, drill and use a wall plug.
  • Two hooks keep a wide print straight.
  • Choose hooks and plugs rated for the weight, especially for plexiglass and box frames.

Questions

What's the largest size you print?
90 × 60 cm (or 60 × 90) on canvas, aluminium, plexiglass and dibond, and A0 (84.1 × 118.9 cm) as a poster. For a wider wall, hang two or three pieces as one block.
What size wall art should I hang above my sofa?
About two thirds of the sofa's width. For a 2 m sofa that's around 130 cm, so two 60 × 90 cm prints side by side or an A0 poster in landscape.
How much does a large print cost?
A 90 × 60 cm canvas costs from €49.99, the same size on aluminium from €119.00, and an A0 poster from €15.99. Canvas, aluminium or plexiglass compares the materials.
What resolution do I need for a 90 × 60 cm print?
At least 5350 × 3579 pixels on aluminium, plexiglass or dibond, and 5669 × 3898 on canvas. For 300 dpi, double those.
Is my phone photo good enough for 90 cm?
A 12-megapixel photo comes out at about 113 dpi, fine from across the room but soft up close. A 48-megapixel photo saved at full resolution is sharp.
