Setting up an A0 file

  1. 1

    Page size 841 × 1189 mm

PowerPoint and Canva both accept a custom size this large. If your program doesn't, design at A4: it scales up exactly four times, so 6 to 8 pt on A4 becomes 24 to 32 pt on A0.

  2. 2

    No bleed

The file is exactly A0, and colour that runs to the edge is printed to the edge. Keep text and logos at least 10 mm in.

  3. 3

    Photos with A0 pixels

Designing at A4 doesn't change what the photos need. A photo across the whole poster needs at least 4967 × 7022 pixels.

  4. 4

    Export as PDF

Text, charts and lines stay sharp at any size, and the file stays well under our 200 MB limit; a single A0 image at 300 dpi is over 400 MB. Fonts and settings: a print-ready PDF.

  5. 5

    Check at 100%

Open the PDF at 100% zoom and read the smallest text. That's roughly how big it will be on the board.

Plans and maps on A0

Keep the scale

A 1:100 drawing only measures right when printed at 100%. Export a page of 841 × 1189 mm and turn off "fit to page" in your CAD program.

Line weights

Lines thinner than 0.1 mm can break up on paper. Use at least 0.13 mm for the thinnest lines.

Maps from QGIS or OpenStreetMap

Export as PDF at full size, or as an image at 300 dpi. OpenStreetMap data needs the credit "© OpenStreetMap contributors" on the map.

Before you order a conference poster

  • Board size and orientation checked in the presenters' instructions. "A0" usually means portrait, not always; if only a maximum is given, print the largest size that fits.
  • The title is readable from across the corridor.
  • Logos and graphs are vector (SVG, EPS, PDF) or 300 dpi at their printed size. No screenshots.
  • A QR code to your paper of at least 3 × 3 cm.
  • Matte paper, so the hall lights don't reflect in your graphs.
  • Push pins in your bag, and a tube to carry the poster rolled with the print facing out.
  • Ordered well before you travel. The checkout shows the delivery date.

A0 or A1?

  • The conference asks for A0, or "max. 841 × 1189 mm"A0An A1 looks lost on an A0 board.
  • A floor plan at 1:50 or a site planA0The standard sheet for building drawings; the scale often only fits on A0.
  • A map for the wall at homeA0 landscape, or A1A0 for a country or a city with street names, A1 for a wall under 1.8 m wide. All poster sizes side by side.
